How To Sell A Scrap Air Conditioner for Scrap Metal

Scrap air conditioners have been slowly growing in value as commodities have pushed their scrap value up to levels that exceed their resale value. Thieves are being knicked for ripping out Scrap Air Conditioners for their metal salvage value, and HVAC men are happy to take your "worthless" old AC units "off your hands" for free. But What can you do about it?

If you are a scrapper, then the idea of saving old metal stuff for its scrap value is not a new one. But, it this my be a good chance for you see what types of techniques you can use to make more money. For example, breaking down a scrap AC unit is the first key to making the most money. (In fact, some scrap yards wil not even take AC units if they havn't been torn down).

Selling Scrap Air Conditioners

The key to selling scrap air conditioners, as noted above, is knowing how to break them down correctly. If you just bring in a whole scrap air conditioner unit, a scrap yard will pay you the bare minimum, or nothing at all.

The most valuable part of old scrap air conditioners is the scrap copper, scrap aluminum, and scrap motors. The motors are housed in teh fans and compressors, and are valuable because of teir scrap copper coils. The scrap copper is found in the condensor coils and other copper lines. The scrap aluminum is also found on teh scrap coils. (Sometimes scrap condesor coils are just made of aluminum)

If your scrap air conditioners have condesor coils that are contaminated with steel (like having steel plates on their sides, liek most scrap air conditioning coils do) then you need to cut off the steel plates. The more metal that you can pull out of the air conditioner and into seperate and distinct catagories, the more money you will end up making.

If you have a chance to pick up more then one scrap air conditioner, for whatever reason, then you will want to set up a bit of a dissassembly line. First break the AC units down into dirty copper aluminum rads, steel, and motors. Then, if you wish to do so, break each of those items down further.

Once you have some small buckets of copper, and stacks of condesor coils, you will be ready to take them into the scrap yard to cash them in. Also, don't forget to bring all the left over scrap steel, as it is worth selling too!
