Alice In Wonderland Review -- What Was Tim Burton Smoking?
Alice in Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton, is very striking visually and thoroughly entertaining.
But it is almost completely different from the children's book that Lewis Carroll wrote.
This is easy to understand, since the book does not have a clear plot easily translated to a screenplay. It is just Alice meeting one unusual character after another as she tries to find her way home.
The book is remarkable for its witty dialogue, filled with very clever wordplay, much of it based on Victorian culture. But most of these references are lost on a modern audience.
So Burton and his writer have created a new Alice story, based on the classic theme of the quest. Alice must summon her strength and courage -- or "muchness" as the Mad Hatter calls it-- to find and kill the terrible Jabberwock.
Again, all of this is completely unrelated to the book. "Jabberwocky" is a poem that Alice reads in the book, but she is not a character in the poem.
So, if Burton's film is so far removed from the original book, what's the result?
Only adequate. The film has almost none of the freshness and creativity of the book, and is finally a weak coming-of-age movie that we've seen so many times before.
But what saves it is Burton's overwrought visual imagination and the risk-taking acting. Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham-Carter as the literally big-headed Red Queen, and Anne Hathaway as the dippy White Queen are weird, wooly, and wonderful
It's hard to take your eyes off of Johnny Depp. He fills every role he plays with a odd peculiarity, a kind of surprisingly offbeat brain wave activity that's difficult to forget. It marks all of his performances and distinguishes him from other actors.
In "Alice" he is, of course, mad, but we actually understand and sympathize with his madness. And his performance is so fresh, creative, and totally engrossing that it saves the film.
