Features of Military Paratrooper Jump Boots
Have you ever seen an army paratrooper in uniform and wondered to yourself what kind of boots they were wearing? The paratrooper's boots have a distinctive look that sets them apart from the boots that other soldiers are issued because they are specifically designed for paratroopers. The type of boots that a paratrooper wears is known as jump boots and military jump boots are very important to a paratrooper for safety reasons. However, paratroopers do not just like the boots for safety reasons, but also for the fact that these boots also set them apart from other soldiers.
Military jump boots also known as the Corcoran or paratrooper boot are specialized footwear that was first designed for parachute units by the United States Army after the start of the Second World War. The army realized after several incidents that paratroopers needed a boot more suited to their unique specialty so with parachute operations in mind the US Army set out to design and develop a boot specifically for paratroopers. The US Army realized that these specially designed boots had to be very rugged and durable to stand up to the demands that would be placed upon them.
The United States Army began the development of military boots in 1940. The idea was for the US Army to incorporate features from other equipment that jumpers were using that worked well and some of those jumpers that the US Army borrowed from were the US Marine Corps Para units, smoke jumpers from the US Forest Service and even German parachute units too. Ultimately, the US Army settled on a design in 1943, which became a great success. The new footwear consisted of a calf high boot that was fully laced supporting the ankle, and had a beveled heel that helped prevent Para cord snags.
The Paratrooper units fell in love with their new military jump boots immediately and the design became a fantastic success. The boots had an immediate positive effect on the US Army parachute unit's performance wise the results of which were less ankle sprains, fractures, and breakages. These results also translated to the lessening of damage to paratrooper's legs as well. Perhaps the greatest all around benefit of the newly designed boot was the increase in unit moral and pride as was evidenced by these troops blousing their pants legs into the boot tops to show of their boots.
While the "Boots, Jumper, Parachute" as the military jump boots were officially designated were a coveted status symbol for US Airborne units in the beginning, the paratroopers did not maintain their exclusive rights to the jump boots for long, because in 1944 the paratrooper uniforms were merged with infantry uniforms. By 1949 all US Army personnel were issued russet combat boots, which resembled the World War II jump boots. However, the russet and the jump boot have a very distinct difference and the difference is that the russet has a complete rubber sole, while the jump boot has a leather strip between the forward sole and the heel.
